2 The USAID Project Duration: 2 years July 2015-December 2017
Grant: US$1.0 million Partners Government of Tanzania-DVS, VCT, TVLA, LITA GALVmed Distributors-Pharmavacs, Vet Life Consultants, Dulle Veterinary Centre, Ronheam International Other partners-to be identified during project implementation

3 Rationale ECF is a major constraint to livestock productivity in ECA
Annual economic loses in Tanzania estimated to be: Smallholder dairy-US$4.4million (Minjauw and McLeod 2003) Pastoral and agropastoral-US$ 129.5million (Minjauw and McLeod 2003) Annual losses from all TBD-US$364 (ECF accounted for 68%-248m) (Kivaria et al. 2006) Does not include “fear of ECF”

4 Rationale Available control options have serious limitations
Tick control –acaricide resistance, Environmentally harmful, management Chemotherapy-high cost, early diagnosis necesssary Zero-grazing-not absolute, not feasible in some areas ITM has been shown to reduce mortality to less than 2% in all production systems (Di Giulio et al.2009) Although up to 1.0million cattle in Tanzania have been immunised this is less t than 5% of the population or 8% of the cattle at risk Why is adoption so slow?

5 Main challenges with the current delivery
Limited coverage by existing distributors-2 at the start of the project Few Trained vaccinators Vaccinators lacking equipment-lack of financing mechanisms Limited cold chain infrastructure-LN, refrigeration (or too long a chain) Inadequate business orientation-Less 10% active vaccinators Limited awareness or incorrect information about the vaccine
