16 Zentangle is a method of drawing developed by a married couple, Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts. Maria is an botanical illustrator and a calligrapher, and Rick spent many years as a monk. They noticed that many of the aspects of meditation, which Rick practiced as a monk, were present when Maria was working on detailed, repetitive pattern work.

18 Zentangles are made up of many smaller sections of patterns, many of which seem pretty complicated, but which are actually quite easy. To begin making Zentangles, it’s fun to look at and learn a number of standard Zentangle patterns. There are literally hundreds of them, in books and online. There are also official Zentangle workshops that you can take.

23 Over the next few days, we are going to be learning some patterns and getting the hang of the Zentangle method. Your final project will be to use Zentangles in a piece of artwork which incorporates a border, string, circle, and tangles. The next few slides will give you some examples of what other people have done.

35 The next four slides are from a book I bought. They are called mandalas. A mandala is a spiritual and ritual symbol in Buddhism of offering the entire universe. Every detail of the mandala is fixed in tradition and has specific symbolic meanings. Loosely translated, the term mandala means “circle,” however, a mandala is far more than a simple shape.
