16. Advocacy McCleary Decision Update
In September 2014, the State Supreme Court found the Legislature to be in contempt of court in the McCleary school funding case because they failed to submit a plan to fully fund basic education by the school year.
During the 2015 legislative session more than $1.3 billion was allocated to gaps called out by McCleary (K-3 class size, operating costs, all-day kindergarten), but the Legislature did not provide funds that would allow the state to assume the full share of school employee salary costs. In response, the Supreme Court imposed a fine of $100,000 a day until the Legislature proposes a solution.
