facts about writing
6
Writing is a Skill. Writing is a skill like any other; it is not some innate talent. No one is born a good writer or a bad writer. Good writing requires practice, practice, and more practice. If you put in thought and hard work, you can be a good writer!
7
Writing makes you smarter.
Writing, of course, makes you a better writer. It also makes you a clearer thinker. It makes you critical of supposed evidence, develops your aptitude for logic, and gives you mental discipline.
8
Writing process = process of Discovery
As you write, you may change directions. A supporting idea may become your main argument. Sometimes writers begin writing without even knowing what they want to say – they just write, and later on, discover which points to include in their essay.
9
Writing is about communication.
Always remember: Audience: To whom are you speaking? Purpose: Why are you speaking to them?
10
The three steps
11
The Writing process is 3 logical steps...
Prewrite Write Rewrite Guess which one is the most important??? Prewriting!!!
12
Or 5 logical steps... Start with prewriting. Do the actual writing.
Discover your main point, or thesis. Find logical, detailed supporting evidence. Organize your thoughts. Do the actual writing. Edit, revise and rewrite.
13
Prewriting
14
prewriting basics There are two fundamental parts of prewriting:
Brainstorm: We brainstorm to discover our main point (thesis) and to find logical, detailed supporting facts (evidence). Outline: We use an outline to organize our thesis and our evidence into a coherent structure.
15
Brainstorming There are many ways to brainstorm:
Freewriting – write whatever comes to mind, don’t worry about spelling, grammar, etc. Listing – make a list of all your ideas without any judgment Diagramming – connect your ideas visually These methods are not mutually exclusive. You can, and should, do them all at once. There are also other methods out there.
16
Outline To outline we need to:
Determine which ideas are good and which ideas are bad. Choose a thesis based on our reflection. Decide which good ideas should be evidence (and give them more detail if necessary). Group similar evidence together. Choose an order for the evidence to be presented.
17
Paragraph example A paragraph can be a mini essay.
We first pre-write by producing the thesis, the evidence, and the organization; once the prewriting is complete, we write; and as necessary, we rewrite. More words just mean more detail. opening sentence → opening paragraph reason & evidence sentences → supporting evidence paragraphs closing sentence → closing paragraph

Brainstorm I don’t like going to the movies, its no fun at all
Too crowded All the people therea are annoying Kids running around Teenagers make noise Ugh, I can’t control myself with all the snack It takes me too long to get there I do like movies, though– it’s not the worst thing So much noise Long lines, sold out shows Parking!!! What a pain
19
Outline Thesis: I don’t like going to the movie theater. Evidence:
Inconvenience of it all 15 min drive Finding parking Long lines, sold out shows… Feet sticking to the floor Lack of self-control Stuff myself with unhealthy snacks Might have popcorn, candy, soda, or all Other moviegoers Kids run up and down the aisle Teens laugh and shout at the screen People of all ages make noise Thesis again.

The paragraph itself Although I love movies, I've found there are drawbacks to moviegoing. One problem is just the inconvenience of it all - To get to the theater, I have to drive for at least 15 minutes or more if the traffic is bad. It can take forever to find a parking spot, and then I have to walk across a huge parking lot to the theater. There I encounter long lines, sold-out shows and ever-increasing prices. And I hate sitting with my feet sticking to the floor because of other people's spilled snacks. Another problem is my lack of self-control. I often stuff myself with unhealthy snacks. My choices might include a bucket of popcorn and a giant soda. The worse problem is some of the other moviegoers. Kids run up and down the aisle. Teenagers laugh and shout at the screen. People of all ages drop soda cups and popcorn tubs, cough and burp, and talk to one another. All in all, I would rather stay home and watch a DVD in the comfort of my own living room.
