RED SCARE Response to the 1917 revolution in Russia
Period of anti-communist hysteria during Bombs mailed to 36 prominent Americans fueled antiradical sentiment. Bomb damaged the house of Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer. The bomber an Italian anarchist died in the blast. Palmer Raids were a series of raids to capture alleged radicals. Thousands were arrested in 33 cities across the nation.

Sacco and Vanzetti Two Italian immigrants were tried and found guilty of the murders of a paymaster and a guard. The immigrants radical political views and their avoidance of military service helped turn the trail against them. Eyewitnesses who could offer alibis for Sacco and Vanzetti were dismissed. They were sentenced to death and then executed.
