4. Functions of Skeletal System
Movement- bones provide points of attachment for muscles

5. Support- give the body shape and structure

6. Protection- provide protection to organs

7. Blood Cell Production- RBC’s and WBC’s are produced in bone marrow, found in long bones

8. Storage- bones store minerals such as calcium and phosphorus

9. Types of Bones Long Bone=Femur Short Bone=Carpals, Tarsals
Flat Bone=Ribs, Sternum
Irregular Bone=vertebrae
Sessamoid Bone=Patella

10. Joints
Ball and Socket- shoulder and hip
allows most movement

11. Hinge- knee and elbow

12. Pivot- neck and head

13. Saddle or Gliding- hand and wrists

14. Immovable or Suture- skull

15. Connective Tissue
Ligament- connect bone to bone

16. Tendon- connect muscle to bone

17. Cartilage- cushion joints

Fracture- a break in a bone

19. Dislocation- bones are moved out of place

20. Osteoporosis- a disease in which the density of the bones decreases

21. Arthritis- a term used to refer to the many different types of joint inflammations

22. Sprain- injury to the ligaments at a joint
