QuickBooks uses Average Cost for inventory valuation Calculate average cost: divide total value of item by number of items (Total value / number of units = average cost) Calculate Average Cost for 48 pairs of Skis on hand: 28 pairs of Skis $75 each = $2,100 20 pairs of Skis $135 each = $2,700 Total value of Skis = $4,800 Average cost is $4,800 / 48 = $100 Amount recorded in transaction for Inventory Asset and Cost of Goods Sold is $500 5 x $100 = $500 Analyze Invoice in Journal: QuickBooks uses the Average Cost method of inventory valuation. The average cost is calculated by dividing the total value of the item by the number of items. (Total value / number of units = average cost) For example, if you had 48 Skis: 28 pairs of Skis purchased for $75 each = $2,100 20 pairs of Skis purchased for $135 each = $2,770 Total value of Skis = $4,800 Average cost is $4,800 / 48 = $100 The amount recorded in the transaction for Inventory Asset and Cost of Goods Sold is $500 (5 x $100 = $500) Copyright ©2016 Pearson Education, Inc.
