Mitosis Cell Division Cell Division is the division of a cell into two daughter cells with the same genetic material.

Cell Division Living cells store critical information in DNA.
As a cell grows, that information is used to build the molecules needed for cell growth. As size increases, the demands on that information grow as well. If a cell were to grow without limit, an “information crisis” would occur.

Cell Division Mitosis (Asexual) is a type of cell division that results in two daughter cells each having the same number and kind of chromosomes as the parent nucleus, typical of ordinary tissue growth

Important Cell Structures Involved in Mitosis
Chromosomes – DNA in the shape of an “X” Chromatid – each strand of a duplicated chromosome Centromere – the area where each pair of chromatids is joined

Centrioles – tiny structures located in the cytoplasm of animal cells that help organize the spindle Spindle – a fanlike microtubule structure that helps separate the chromatids

Cell Division Prophase - the chromosomes become visible as paired chromatids and the nuclear envelope disappears

Cell Division Metaphase - the chromosomes become attached to the spindle fibers.

Cell Division Anaphase - the chromosomes move away from one another to opposite poles of the spindle.

Cell Division Telophase - the chromatids or chromosomes move to opposite ends of the cell and two nuclei are formed

Cell Division Cytokinesis - is the separation into two daughter cells.
