Greek City-States Most powerful ones were Athens and Sparta
Around 750 B.C. Greek society began to develop into city-states. Most powerful ones were Athens and Sparta Each had 5,000-10,000 citizens 6

Greek City-States Direct Democracy was developed in Greece
Used in Athens, Greece Citizens – those who took part in government - had rights and responsibilities Based on ownership Could vote Hold public office Speak for self in court In return citizens were expected to serve the government and defend the polis in times of war Trial by Jury was developed 7

Sparta City-State Sparta was an Oligarchy
A few rule the city-state The government was a military city-state or a military oligarchy

Began to seek truth and believed and promoted the power of logic and reason to explain all things. Their main job was to promote thought and reason Used logic and reason to solve problems Well-known men are Aristotle, Plato and Socrates

Alexander the Great, ruler of Greece, spread Greek ideas throughout the world Western Europe borrowed ideas from Greece Adopted the ideas of Greek and Roman Democracy Greece and democracy had the greatest influence on political thought

Geography of Greece The terrain of Greece was not conducive to unification of the Greek people. Mainland Greece is divided by a short but rugged mountain range. Greek rivers are shallow and non-navigable. Soil is rocky and poor. Coastline is very irregular with many excellent natural harbors. The geography of Greece helped develop city- states 16
