1 G.R.A.P.E.S. Ancient China

2 Geography Ancient China is very dry and vast. It is the worlds fourth largest country. In the west of China there are the Himalayas, with some of the highest mountains in the world! The melting snows from the mountains in the west create the headwaters for two of China's most important rivers, the Yellow River, and the Yangze River.

3 Religion The main religions are Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Taoism. Confucianism is another indigenous religion.

4 accomplishments Shi Huangdi was the first emperor of the Qin Dynasty. He brought the period of warring states to an end by unifying the nation under his control. He built a canal connecting the Yangtze to central China and constructed the first Great Wall of China. Toilet paper, gunpowder, magnetic compass, porcelain, printing, and paper making were made.

5 politics Ancient China had a government ruled by dynasties, sometimes united under one dynasty Their king was called an emperor.

6 Economy By the time of Confucius, Chinese people traded cattle, salt, iron, and silk. To facilitate trade, the First emperor instituted a uniform weights and measure system. They also traded externally through the famous silk road.

7 Social Structure The king (emperor) was the highest rank. He led the government, gave land to nobles. Next in rank was the nobles and then the officials. Kids must start school early and pass tests to be officials. Next were merchants, then the artisans. The last class is the peasants.
