2 The Maersk Triple-E Watch the video of the Maersk Triple-E
After watching, consider the following: Why is this ship necessary? How does this relate to the idea of global connectivity?

3 What is Globalization?

4 What is Globalization? It is NOT: It IS: A formal structure
A meaningless buzzword A good or a bad thing An imposed ideal It IS: A process that results in the growing interconnectedness of the world

5 Globalization Is… The increasing interdependence of economies, political systems, and societies on a global scale. Process is driven by technological innovation that allow for interconnectedness between people, groups, organizations, countries, etc. “Globalization is the integration of capital, technology, and information across national borders, in a way that is creating a single global market, and to some degree, a global village.” Thomas Friedman

6 A (Very) Brief History Globalization has deep roots: The Silk Road
Seaborne trade Voyages of discovery For our purposes, there are two major phases: – Industrialization, Imperialism and Capitalism 1945 – Present – Worldwide Trade Liberalized

7 Marx and Engels, The Communist Manifesto (1848)
“The bourgeoisie has through its exploitation of the world market given a cosmopolitan character to production and consumption in every country. All old established national industries have been destroyed or are daily being destroyed. They are dislodged by new industries, whose introduction becomes a life and death question for all civilised nations. In place of the old local and national seclusion and self-sufficiency, we have intercourse in every direction, universal inter-dependence of nations.” The introduction of capitalism, combined with industrialization and development of technology spurred globalization in the late 1800’s.

8 History – Phase 1 By 1850, the world was relatively easy to navigate
Ships, railroads, telegraph, etc. Made the exploitation of resources and labor in colonies easy and cheap Industrialization increased demand for cheap labor and foreign materials Steel, rubber, petroleum product Colonies, countries and peoples became intrinsically linked to other global powers Economics, politics, power, etc.

9 History – Slow Down The Great Depression slowed the rate of Globalization

10 WWII Brings it Back! As the saying goes, “to the victor goes the spoils” As the capitalist economies emerged from WWII victorious and – more importantly – rich, global trade was revitalized Interest in foreign good and international travel increased Technology continued to advance Shipping and air travel got cheaper The rise of trade organizations/agreements Provide incentives/protections NAFTA, NATO, APEC, ASEAN, EU, OPEC, etc. etc. Worldwide trade becomes widely encouraged, especially after the fall of communism
