1 Games to engage users and collect data
Irene Celino (Cefriel) Games to engage users and collect data

2 Night Knights Game with a purpose (GWAP) to solve one of the “Cities at Night” challenges, i.e. classifying pictures taken from ISS and made available by NASA Purpose: identify photos of cities at night, as well as photos of stars and black pictures (for calibration) Achievement: design and development of an online game with a robust mechanism for aggregation of users’ classification Adopted for education and a competition: winner participated to expedition to see the solar eclipse in the US

3 Night Knights features
Multilingual and responsive user interface Guest access or social login Simple classification game mechanics (two-players agreement) + automatic responses’ aggregation Profile page, leaderboard, badges Download hi-res pictures Game video tutorial Secure API for data exchange

4 Game Enabler to build Night Knights-like games
Night Knights is just an example of a GWAP to solve a Data Linking problem (specifically, classification) A “white-label” version of the software behind Night Knights was released as open source (Apache v2 license) and made available on GitHub See It contains a few data from Night Knights to let understand how it works; it can be customized and extended for other Data Linking scenarios in other LPIs Come to us to learn how to build your own games! Data linking: collection, creation, ranking, validation (in the DoW: data acquisition, data curation, data annotation)

5 Stars Beat educational game
Goal: create a set of card decks to teach players about light pollution Each deck has cards covering a particular topic (e.g. outside lighting, city illumination, animals, etc.) Each dimension in a card indicates a light pollution effect (e.g. blue light is more pollutant than red) The winning condition is related to the minimization of light pollution Early prototype:

6 Game Enabler to build Stars Beat-like games
As we did with Night Knights, also for the Stars Beat game, we intend to implement a “white label” version and to release it as open source as another “game enabler” We are also developing some guidelines on “how to create a card deck”, to facilitate the process of creating a new instance of our game enabler Come to us to learn how to build your own games!
