Purpose?

2 Starter – Verbal Recounts
Take it in turns to tell your talking partner about 3 days of your holiday. Think about the best way to start, how you should talk about what you did and how to finish.

It was a cold and rainy when I woke up on Saturday, but it didn’t matter – we were going to Disneyland! Well, we wouldn’t be there until the next day, but my Mum, Dad, brother and I couldn’t wait. Half an hour later, after breakfast, Dad started to pack the car. RECOUNT

5 Recount or Not a Recount?
Winter arrives in Antarctica in March. The continent is in the Southern Hemisphere and has seasons that are opposite those in the north. Emperor penguins are the largest of the 17 species, or kinds, of penguins, and they spend their entire lives on Antarctic ice and in its waters. NOT A RECOUNT

Chronological order – sequential words : Then, later, next, ten minutes later, after that Usually first person, sometimes third person Past tense Descriptive language Introduction…details…conclusion

7 Starter – Describing times of day
Put these times in order. Can you think of more? At about ten o’clock in the morning When I woke up During lunch Whilst my Dad cooked dinner After breakfast As the sun was rising Before bedtime In the middle of the afternoon When I woke up

8 Structure of a Recount INTRODUCTION – 1 paragraph
MAIN TEXT – at least 2 paragraphs CONCLUSION – 1 paragraph

9 Structure of a Recount INTRODUCTION
This paragraph INTRODUCES the recount. It should be concise (short and clear).

10 Introduction 5 W’s What? Who? Where? Why? When? What did they do?
Who did the activity? Where? Where did this take place? Introduction 5 W’s When? When did this happen? Why? What was the purpose of the activity?

11 WALT : Write the 5 W’s for an introduction paragraph
Think about your recent holiday and pick one day. Make a list of the 5 W’s for that day.

12 Starter – What is good / bad about this introduction?
Last weekend, on Saturday morning at ten o’clock, I went with my sister to the Perth Zoo. We had lunch there and saw some amazing creatures. I had wanted to visit the zoo for months, and I finally found the time last weekend.

13 Now write an introduction for your recount!

14 Main Content Put the events of your day in chronological order.
Don’t use full sentences in your plan!

15 Be Descriptive! Add lots of adjectives to your work.
Remember I have not experienced your day so you need to describe it to me. Make sure you tell me how you feel about it!
