1. Preparing Before Dec. 1st: 1. Update your resume & get a PDF of your undergrad transcript 2. Decide what city or area(s) you are going to apply to 3. Research the firms, online (e.g. Vault, Chambers) and in person (e.g. Career Services, Informational Interviews) 4. Most importantly: Talk to your S I P L A Mentor

2. Practicing 1. Watch last year’s presentation
2. Complete the handout 3. Moot with your mentor, classmates, friends, family, and by yourself in the mirror. 4. Be wary of common pitfalls: Poor posture & negative body language (remember to smile) Overly complex answers Sounding robotic, like you’re reciting from memory Not enough questions (be prepared to ask 20 minutes worth of questions)

(1) Tell me about yourself (2) Why did you go to law school? (3) How do you like law school? (4) What's your favorite class? (5) What's your least favorite class? (6) Why do you want to do IP? (7) Why didn't you stay an engineer/scientist? (8) Why XYZ Firm? (9) Why X geographic region? (10) Describe your ideal job experience (ideal mentor/mentee relationship, what you are looking for in a firm, etc.). (11) Tell me something that’s not on your resume that you think I should know (Interests Question). (12) Can you talk me through your legal work product/writing sample? Summer Info (2L Interviews) (1) How did you like your summer? (2) What types of things did you work on? (3) Who did you work with?

Final Thoughts 1. If you don’t get an offer at a firm, it’s not the end of the world. The vast majority of 1Ls do not work at firms. Lots of other great IP opportunities will come up over spring semester. Some unpaid internships will teach a lot more than firm associateships and generally be a better experience. 2. This is great practice for Loyola. SIPLA and Career Services will be providing more information next semester.
