Tel: +36/1/ , Fax: +36/1/ Homepage: Danube Region Strategy (DRS) Conferences Thematic focus 2: Transportation „EU Strategy for Danube Region and the Western Balkans: Development of Trans-European Transportation Networks-Challenges and Opportunities” Expert presentation by: Dr. Lajos Veres, Regional Economics PhD., Chairman, Scientific Association of Spatial Development, Hungary 27. June 2017
2
Theoretical Background
Cutanda, Paricio: Infrastructure and Regional Economic Growth (1994) Vickermann, Spiekermann, Wegener: Accessibility and Economic Development in Europe (1999) Erdősi: European Transport and Regional Development (2000) Veres: Transport Network and Regional Accessibility (2008)
3
Results of Research I. TRANS index – complex evaluation of regional transport networks of 206 NUTS2 regions in EU15 in 1996, which included: All railways, km Share of electric railway lines , % All roads, km, Share of highways roads, % Airport traffic, total passengers, Waterways, km
4
Results of Research II. Conclusions: The regions with higher TRANS index are featured by higher GDP values. The TRANS index explained GDP value in 20% degree.
5
Practical Background (2006-2015)
Parks and Economy (Interreg IV/B): Italy, Austria, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Hungary Donauregionen (Interreg IV/B): Serbia, Croatia, Hungary Datourway (EU SEE): Serbia, Croatia, Hungary Donauregionen + (EU SEE): Serbia, Croatia, Hungary DaHar (EU SEE): Austria, Serbia, Croatia, Hungary

Inland Waterways Strategical Pillars of Development Corridor VII.
ReEvaluation of the Danube waterway The transformation of modal split as main priority supposes the measures and development activities necessary to ensure technological criteria of navigation on the Danube Bi- and trilateral international co-operation

Inland Waterways Strategical Pillars of Development Corridor VII
2. Accessibility – the development of transport infrastructure Small and middle sized cities may have determining role (parallel to the capital) in the nodal regions of transport networks, as they could be able to promote the development of their local economic potential, and internationalisation through the utilisation of their ports with intermodal services, Ro-Ro services. Establishing trimodal product-oriented docks Renewable energy production

Inland Waterways Strategical Pillars of Development Corridor VII
3. Environment friendly transport - alternative – transport systems The Danube waterway may be fitted in an efficient way into the agglomeration transport systems around large cities; and also to promote tourism, and extending water transport services for the extension of high standard leisure spending. Integrating passenger navigation into the public transport system Construction of passenger and yacht docks
9
Sava Basin
10
Recommended measures for Development Sava Basin
To upgrade waterways up to the international waterway classes, To remove bottlenecks on port access points, To construct the Danube-Sava Canal, To connect ports with enterpreneurinal zones, To connect ports with the main road corridors , Technological modernisation of ports, Integration of ports into logistics and distribution chains,
11
General Solutions I. 1. Basic principles of the development of transport systems by West-Balcan national spatial development concepts are: Connecting with European territory, so inclusion in the Trans-European Transport Network (hihgt speed roads and railways) Promoting policentric spatial development Sustainable development of infrastructure systems International border crossing
12
General Solutions II. 2. Structural challengies of development transport systems North-South axes (SETA, Seaports, V4…) East-West axes Urbanization (city regions in the Europen urban space) Tourism-driving force of GDP Integration to Global Economy
