1 Cite the line from page 1 of the book I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai.
One year ago I left my home for school and never returned.

2 “One year ago I left my home for school and never returned” (Yousafzai 1).

3 Textual Evidence

4 Why do you need to cite information?
When you are writing a paper that includes information from a source, you must give credit to the person who wrote it.

5 Three ways to cite information
Quoting: Writing a direct line from a text Paraphrasing: Writing information from a text in your own words Summarizing: Writing a summary on an entire text in your own words NO matter which way you cite your information, you must give credit to the author

6 “quotation marks” (author’s last name page number).
Quoting (direct quotations): the use of direct words that is identical to the original, therefore matching the source document word (book) for word. “quotation marks” (author’s last name page number). “Maybe I just couldn’t give up hope. It’s like that in America” (Okimoto 3). According to Okimoto, “Maybe I just couldn’t give up hope. It’s like that in America” (3). (last name and page number) is called an in-text citation or parenthetical citation

7 Paraphrasing (indirect quotations): the use of a passage from the source document into your own words, therefore it usually is shorter than the original passage, taking a somewhat broader segment of the source and condensing it slightly. Paraphrase (last name and page number). Americans don’t give up hope, and neither will I (Okimoto 3).

8 Summarizing: the use of putting the main idea(s) into your own words, which includes only the main point(s). Like a paraphrase it will be significantly shorter than the original document; takes a broader overview. (make sure to still introduce the author) Maya faced many obstacles in her life, but moving to America is by far the most difficult thing she has done. After reading “My Favorite Chaperone” by Jean Davies Okimoto, I now have a better understanding of the struggles in which immigrants endure moving to America. Though Maya did her best to fit in with the cultural norms of America, she still valued her family traditions, which in return helped her obtain a treasured experience.

9 What do you need in order to quote?
1. “” Quotations marks 2. Direct words from the author 3. () Parenthesis 4. Authors last name This is important because if you didn’t write it, then you need to give credit to who did. If not this is know as plagiarism. 5. Page number of the book 6. A period to end the sentence. “direct words” (author’s last name page number).

10 1. Quote a line from page 3 of the book I Am Malala by Malala Yousafzai Write this as a paraphrase. I slept in the long room at the front of our house, and the only furniture was a bed and a cabinet which I had bought with some of the money I had been given as an award for campaigning for peace in our valley and the right for girls to go to school. On some shelves were all the gold-coloured plastic cups and trophies I had won for coming first in my class. Only twice had I not come top – both times when I was beaten by my class rival Malka e-Noor. I was determined it would not happen again.
