Bilingual education is an approach to teaching that uses two languages:
English Student’s native language For example: If a teacher uses English and Spanish to teach a lesson, that is bilingual education.

A native language is the first language a person learns at home (usually from their parents)
Spanish! This baby is learning English from his mom, so his native language will be English. This baby is learning French from her mom, so her native language will be French. This baby is learning Spanish from his mom. What will his native language be?

Is English the official language of the United States?
No! The United States doesn’t have an “official language.” Why would it be useful to learn English anyway?

People in the United States speak many different languages.
People speak 350 different languages in the U.S. The most commonly spoken languages are: English Spanish Chinese French Tagalog (spoken in the Philippines) What language do you speak? What is your native language?

Proponent/Opponent Proponent means someone who is in favor of (for) something Opponent means someone who is not in favor of (against) something For example: If someone thinks that bilingual education is good, they are a proponent of bilingual education. For example: If someone thinks that bilingual education is not good, they are an opponent of bilingual education.

An advantage is something that makes it easier to succeed.
For example: Bilingual education gives bilingual students an advantage because they get to learn in their native language, too. For example: If someone gets a head-start in a race, they are at an advantage because they are more likely to win.

A disadvantage is something that makes it harder to succeed.
For example: This boy is smaller than his older brother and that makes it harder for him to win. He is at a disadvantage. For example: Bilingual education might put bilingual students at a disadvantage because it is hard to learn two languages.
