2 INSTRUCTIONS 1 For slides 1-6 which follow, decide which type the conditional sentences are (Zero, I, II, II or mixed) and explain what their general meaning is. Click on the line after ‘Check’ or press Enter to see the correct answer.

3 1 If a virus attacks a computer, it prevents it from working properly.
Check: Zero conditional: a statement of general fact

4 2 If their best side plays, Manchester United will probably come out on top. Check: First conditional: a condition that is possible/probable in the future

5 3 If I had enough money, I would buy a new digital camera. Check:
Second conditional: a condition which is impossible or improbable in the present

6 4 If you had told me you needed some advice, I would have helped you.
Check: Third conditional: an impossible past event because of a past cause

7 5 Our firm would not be in debt today if we had listened to our accountant. Check: Mixed conditional: an impossible present situation because of an impossible past condition

8 6 If I knew anything about business, I would have started my own one long ago. Check: Mixed conditional: an impossible past situation because of an impossible general (incl. the present) condition

9 INSTRUCTIONS 2 Unreal Conditionals 1
For slides 7-10 which follow, decide what the real facts behind the sentences are, as in this example: You wouldn’t have such a nasty cough if you didn’t smoke so much. You smoke a lot, so you have a nasty cough. Click on the line after ‘Check’ or press Enter to see the correct answer.

10 7 If I could drive a car, I would buy one immediately. Check:
I can’t drive a car, so I won’t buy one immediately.

11 8 If I could drive a car, I wouldn’t have gone to Istanbul by bus.

12 9 If you hadn’t told Jane, nobody would have learned that we are cousins. Check: You told Jane, and everybody learned that we are cousins.

13 10 If you hadn’t told Jane, nobody would know that we are cousins.
Check: You told Jane, and now everyone knows we are cousins.

14 INSTRUCTIONS 2 Unreal Conditionals 2
For slides 11-18, make conditional sentences from the facts given, as in the example below. The resulting sentences will be Type 2, Type 3, or Mixed). I don’t speak French. 15 11 You don’t spend enough time with the children. They don’t like you.
Check: If you spent more time with the children, they would like you.

18 14 He stole money from the company. He spent five years in prison as a result. Check: If he hadn’t stolen money from the company, he wouldn’t have spent five years in prison.

19 15 Tom and Mary are having a row because she lost his squash racket. Check: Tom and Mary wouldn’t be having a row if she hadn’t lost his squash racket.

20 16 You are so gullible! You believed all the lies he told you! Check: If you weren’t so gullible, you wouldn’t have believed all the lies he told you.

21 17 I didn’t look after my teeth, so I have to wear false ones now.
Check: If I had looked after my teeth, I wouldn’t have to wear false ones now.

22 18 I went on a sea cruise when I was 20. There, I met Gloria and fell in love at first sight. I am happily married now, and we have two lovely children. Check: If I hadn’t gone on a sea cruise when I was 20, I wouldn’t have met Gloria and fallen in love at first sight; I wouldn’t be happily married now, and we wouldn’t have two lovely children.
