3 First Aid for Choking Target: I will be able to describe procedures for emergency care and life saving Choking: An emergency in which the airway is blocked. Without oxygen, brain damage can occur in as little as 4 to 6 minutes. Pg. 37

4 Universal Distress Signal: A warning that a person is having difficulty breathing and is shown by clutching the throat with both hands. Abdominal Thrusts- a series of thrusts to the abdomen that force air from the lungs to dislodge an object

5 First Aid for Choking: If You’re Choking: Make a fist with one hand and grab the fist with your other hand. Give yourself five quick abdominal thrusts Apply pressure inward and push up towards your diaphragm in one smooth motion If a sturdy chair is available, push your body against the back of the chair, pushing between the waist and ribs.

6 Conscious Choking Adult or Child:
Stand behind the victim and wrap your arms around their waist If the victim is much taller than you have them get down on their knees Make a fist with one hand and place the thumb side of the fist into the victim’s abdomen above the navel and below the rib cage Give 5 quick abdominal thrusts and repeat until the object is out  Conscious Choking Demonstration Let’s practice!

7 Unconscious Choking Adult or Child:
Call 911 Roll victim on their back Open their airway by lifting their chin while tilting their head back Perform CPR by finding the lower part of the victim’s breastbone and measure up the width of 2 fingers from that point

8 Place the heel of your other hand over the heel of the first and interlock your fingers
Position your shoulders over your hands and lock your elbows straight 7. Compress the chest (2 inches) hard and fast (30 times at a rate of 100 compressions per minute) Remember! Keep the beat!! Look for the object in the person’s mouth and remove it Unconscious Choking Demonstration

9 Choking Infant: Have someone call 911 if the victim isn’t coughing or crying Place them face up on your upper leg so their head is lower than the rest of their body

10 Press 2-3 fingers into the center of the breast bone and give 5 quick chest thrusts
If the victim still cannot cough/cry, place them face down on your forearm or upper leg

11 7. Repeat chest thrusts and back blows until the object is out
5. Support their head by placing your hand around their lower jaw and chest 6. Use the heel of your hand to give them 5 quick blows to their back between the shoulder blades 7. Repeat chest thrusts and back blows until the object is out Choking Infant Demonstration  Summary:

Choose an type of choking victim and create a step by step visual of what you should do to give first aid to that individual. *Use a minimum of 4 colors* Pg. 36
