2 Causes of World War I The First World War began on August 14th 1914, when German soldiers invaded Belgium. The causes of the war began many years before.

3 The war was caused by four main factors; nationalism, imperialism, militarism, and the alliance system. Nationalism Imperialism Militarism Alliances

4 The spark that ignited the war took place on June 28th 1914, when Austrian Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife, Sophie, were assassinated by a Serbian nationalist.

5 The war will be fought by Germany, Austria-Hungary and the Ottoman Empire against England, France, and Russia.

6 The war soon turned into a bloody, devastating stalemate
The war soon turned into a bloody, devastating stalemate. Each side dug trenches that would stretch from the English Channel (on the Atlantic Ocean) to Switzerland.
