Tobacco Free Policy developing ownership, raising awareness and sustainability through consultation.
Staff Audit
From the onset, consultation was carried out with the Pupil Support team to generate a plan. Pupil questionnaires were completed through PSE to help evaluate our current program. Pupil focus groups helped us to identify their main concerns around smoking. And various forms of communication allowed us to get people to consider our pledge and recognise our policy; news letter, webpage, signage etc.
But for the purpose of this demonstration, I will outline how the initial consultation with staff helped develop ownership and usstainability.

Do you think that schools should educate pupils on the dangers of smoking?
Because time is a critical resource I decided to adopt one of the tips within the ‘creative consultation’ resource – KISS.
This was slightly contrived as we can anticipate the response. Yes it is our job!
This allowed me to introduce the charter at faculty level through DMs asking Do you agree with the principles within the charter.

During a quick DM – remember time is a valuable resource they were all happy to… agree, sign, share etc.
And, from this affiliation evolves ownership and sustainability – hopefully!

Ownership – referred to indirectly during social interactions – included directly in lessons to compliment CfE & Girfec etc.
Sustainability can be tough but practically if it can appear on the school calendar as part of already established events, then it can be updated and retained annually.
