2 Vocabulary Messiah David Goliath House of David Covenant of Grant
Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7) Bathsheba Uriah the Hittite

3 Meeting David Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed [David] in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward.

4 Meeting David [Goliath] stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, “Choose a man for yourselves, and let him come down to me. If he is able to fight with me and kill me, then we will be your servants; but if I prevail against him and kill him, then you shall be our servants and serve us.”

5 Meeting David When Saul and all Israel heard these words of the Philistine, they were greatly afraid… David said, “What shall be done for the man who kills this Philistine, and takes away the reproach from Israel? For who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?”

6 Meeting David [David’s] eldest brother Eliab heard him talking to the men; and Eliab’s anger was kindled against David. He said, “Why have you come down? With whom have you left those few sheep in the wilderness? I know your presumption and the evil of your heart; for you have come down just to see the battle.” David said, “What have I done now? It was only a question!”

7 Meeting David Saul clothed David with his armor; he put a bronze helmet on his head and clothed him with a coat of mail. David strapped Saul’s sword over the armor, and he tried in vain to walk, for he was not used to them. Then David said to Saul, “I can’t walk with these, for I am not used to them.” So David removed them. Then he took his staff in his hand, and chose five smooth stones from the wadi, and put them in his shepherd’s bag in the pouch; his sling was in his hand, and he drew near to the Philistine.

8 Meeting David When the Philistine looked and saw David, he disdained him, for he was only a youth…The Philistine said to David, “Am I a dog, that you come to me with sticks?”… But David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come to you in the name of YHWH Lord of Hosts…this very day YHWH will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down and cut off your head.”

9 Meeting David When the Philistine drew nearer to meet David, David ran quickly towards the battle line to meet the Philistine. David put his hand in his bag, took out a stone, slung it, and struck the Philistine on his forehead; the stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground. So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone, striking down the Philistine and killing him; there was no sword in David’s hand. Then David ran and stood over the Philistine; he grasped his sword, drew it out of its sheath, and killed him; then he cut off his head with it.

12 The Davidic Covenant (2 Samuel 7)
YHWH declares to you that YHWH will make you a house. When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your ancestors, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come forth from your body, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build a house for my name…I will not take my steadfast love from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away from before you. Your house and your kingdom shall be made sure forever before me; your throne shall be established forever.

13 The Davidic Covenant “When [your descendant] commits iniquity, I will punish him with a rod such as mortals use, with blows inflicted by human beings, but I will not take my steadfast love from him.”

14 2 Samuel 11: The Trouble Starts
In the spring, the time of year when kings go out to battle, David sent Joab with his officers and all Israel with him…but David remained at Jerusalem. Late one afternoon, when David rose from his couch and was walking about on the roof of the king’s house, he saw from the roof a woman bathing; the woman was very beautiful.

15 What does david do? David sent someone to ask about the woman. It was reported: “This is Bathsheba daughter of Eliam, wife of Uriah the Hittite.” So David sent messengers to get her, and she came to him, and he lay with her…The woman conceived; and she sent a message to David, telling him, “I am pregnant.”

16 Plan A So David sent word to Joab, “Send me Uriah the Hittite.” And Joab sent Uriah to David. When Uriah came to him, David asked how Joab and the people were doing, and how the war was going. Then David said to Uriah, “Go to your house, and wash your feet.”

17 What does Uriah do and why?
But Uriah slept at the entrance of the king’s house with all the servants of his lord, and did not go to his house. David said to Uriah, “You have just come from a journey. Why do you not go to your house?”

18 What does uriah do and why?
Uriah said, “The Ark and Israel and Judah live in booths; and my lord Joab and the servants of my lord are camping in the open field; shall I go to my house to eat and to drink, and to lie with my wife? As you life, and as your soul lives, I will not do such a thing.”

19 Plan b In the morning David wrote a letter to Joab, and had it delivered by Uriah. In the letter he wrote, “Set Uriah in the front lines of the hardest fighting, and then draw the troops back from him, so that he may be struck down and die”…and Uriah the Hittite was killed.

20 When the wife of Uriah heard that her husband was dead, she cried loudly over him. When the mourning was over, David sent and brought her to his house, and she became his wife, and bore him a son.

21 The consequences “I made you king over Israel, and I rescued you from the hand of Saul…why have you done what is evil in my sight? You have killed Uriah the Hittite with the sword… Now therefore the sword shall never depart from your house, for you have despised me, and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.” Thus says YHWH: “I will raise up trouble against you from within your own house.”
