Do Now: Take your Do Now sheet out and complete. Explain how an organism becomes resistant. Name any three pieces of evidence that supports the theory of evolution by natural selection. Explain how humans have used artificial selection in beneficial ways. Explain how a human hand, a bat’s wing and a whale’s fin are homologous structures.

Environmental Science Do Now 9-29-17 KEY
There is variation within the population of organisms. Most of the organisms are susceptible to the pesticide and die; however, not all of the organisms die. Some have a mutated gene that allows them to survive exposure to the pesticide. These resistant organisms survive and can pass their resistant gene to their offspring. Three pieces of evidence that support the theory of evolution by natural selection are: fossils records, anatomical records, and molecular records. Humans have used artificial selection in beneficial ways, such as, breeding desired livestock and pets, and growing crops to feed their families (agriculture). A human hand, a bat’s wing and a whale’s fin are homologous structures because they all have the same bone structures (wrist bones, upper and lower arm bones, etc.). However, they do not have the same function(s).

Students will read the article on Relationships between Organisms and will annotate the article. Each symbol is worth 2.5 points and each noteworthy comment is worth 5 points. The goal is for each student to have 70 points worth of annotations and comments from the article.

Symbiosis The term symbiosis (from the Greek: syn "with"; and biosis "living") commonly describes close and often long-term interactions between different biological species. The symbiotic relationship may be categorized as being mutualistic, parasitic, or commensal in nature.[

Predator-Prey Relationships
An interaction in which one animal (the predator) captures and feeds on another animal (the prey) is called predation. Predators can affect the size of prey populations in a community and determine the places prey can live and feed. Birds of prey, for example, can play an important role in regulating the population sizes of mice, voles, and other small mammals.

Competition In a forest, for example, plant roots compete for resources such as water and nutrients in the soil. Animals compete for resources such as food, mates, and places to live and raise their young. Competition can occur both between members of the same species (known as intraspecific competition) and between members of different species (known as interspecific competition).

Commensalism In ecology, commensalism is a class of relationship between two organisms where one benefits and the other is not significantly harmed or benefited.
