Antigone Review “Antigone” Section Reviews PROLOGUE and PARODOS
PROLOGUE and PARODOS Antigone asks her sister, Ismene, to help her bury their brother, Polyneices, even though it is against the law. She says no, but Antigone says she will do it anyway. The chorus flashes back to tell us about the battle between Eteocles and Polyneices. SCENE 1 and ODE 1 Creon makes his decree about Eteocles and Polyneices, and the Sentry tells Creon that Polyneices was buried properly. Creon tells him to find out who did it, or HE will be killed. LOVE conquers all, and the chorus also says that the laws of the land must be followed but so must the laws of the gods. SCENE 2 and ODE 2 Creon is told that Antigone buried Polyneices, and he does not believe it. He accuses Ismene as well, but Antigone will not let her take credit because is excessively proud and does not want to share the credit for the burial. The chorus tells us that excessive pride is horrible to the gods and that the Curse of Oedipus is alive and well.
