1 Create a unified, 3 part painting of a subject of your choice
Painting Triptych Create a unified, 3 part painting of a subject of your choice

2 Historically, artists created a triptych (a painting made on 3 panels) by painting on two side panels that closed like doors over a central painting. Often they were religious in nature.

3 Today, artists continue to use this traditional three-part structure, although contemporary paintings usually have three panels side by side rather than side panels that open and close.

4 Think of a composition suited to a 3-panel format:
After looking at some modern and historical triptychs, think about how different artists divide his or her compositions among the 3 panels? Think of a composition suited to a 3-panel format: Scene or setup from 3 different views, 3 styles, or 3 times of day or year Reflect a sequence; something before, during, or after a particular event.

5 Creating your triptych
Select a subject for your painting. - draw a pencil sketch for each panel - decide whether each panel will be the same size or if the central panel will be more prominent - think about how to create a sense of unity across the three panels.
