Pericles, the leader of Athens, inherited a golden age, which is a period of great wealth and power.
Pericles had three goals: Strengthen democracy, spread the empire, and make Athens more beautiful.

Many advancements were made in the Greek culture during the golden age and many new teachings were created by philosophers, people who examine questions about the universe. The Greek golden age ended after the Peloponnesian War between Sparta and Athens, which Sparta won.
