1 1st Year Lab Projects: Open Day Briefing
Open Days Thursday 14 June 2pm-5pm Departmental Friday 15 June 1pm-4pm Schools You need to prepare a poster presentation for use on these days You must also produce a project report by Monday 18th at 4pm HARD DEADLINE

2 Continuous assessment by demonstrator
Assessment of poster + communication skills by demonstrator Project report assessed by independent member of academic staff The report assessor will not be an expert in the field of your project. Adapt your report accordingly.

3 Departmental Open Day/Posters
Thursday 14th 2-5 Departmental Open Day Need to clear away all extraneous items (tools etc.) All members of the department (staff/students) are invited to visit the labs and talk to you about your projects. (Mention in passing to your tutor, your friends, friends from different departments!) You need to GRAB people’s attention Try to draw people in by fair means and foul! (but no drinks) Make your poster EYE CATCHING

4 Tell office if you need a computer (okay to use your own laptop).
Project Assessment- Posters Displays should have : Visual appeal, snappy title, use of graphics, balanced layout and readable. Don’t write a report! Maximum information using concise language/format, summary, why?, how?, Results. Be prepared to explain at both an introductory and detailed level to non-experts. Look at examples from last year. Poster materials available from lab office. Tell office if you need a computer (okay to use your own laptop).

5 Friday 15th 1-4 Schools Open day
Part of the Admissions process Up to th formers from schools, mostly in the London area, will visit the department Remember that your audience on this day will know less general physics They may want to talk more generally about what it is like to be a student at

6 Project Reports Project Report
These may be written individually or jointly. However, as you are individually assessed, joint reports must have whole sections written by each individual and these must be clearly identified. Scientific report style (see previous handout). Page limit for individual reports is 8 sides, 12 for joint reports. Try aims, techniques, results. Avoid narrative report. Deadline Monday 18 June , 4pm is absolute!
