1 A Bento Discovery System featuring the EBSCO EDS API

2 Library Discovery at a Crossroads
Academic libraries should “step back to reconfirm (or reconsider) their vision for discovery, to ensure that their visions connect with information-seeking practices and preferences, and to determine whether they have a viable strategy in place … to achieve their vision” Roger Schonfeld, Ithaka S+R, 2014

3 Full Library Discovery
“Full Library Discovery” refers to discovery approaches that move beyond the retrieval of collection materials to also include local information services and content such as library websites, pathfinder information, dataset repositories, subject specialist links, and course management system content. -- Lorcan Dempsey, OCLC, 2013

4 Challenges in Discovery
JISC 2015 report: Spotlight on the Digital; Recent Trends and Research in Scholarly Discovery Behaviour Questions: Should libraries care whether they are the starting point for users seeking scholarly content? Have libraries always played a supplementary role in topical search/exploration? Should aiding known-item discovery and delivery be the paramount concern? How important is the Gateway function?

5 Evolution of Discovery
Over the last 30 years: Supercatalogs with A&I services loaded Federated search systems employing broadcast searching Web-Scale Discovery Systems (WSDS) with metadata and full-text content aggregated into a single consolidated index Hybrid bento style systems with information results presented in a zoned screen display with content grouped by type/material

6 Classic Web-Scale Discovery
Recent studies on WSDS have identified user issues with interpreting blended results displays in the aggregated indexes, relevancy rankings of results, and inadequate access to local library services User emphasis on known-item searching, streamlined access to full-text Tracking 35 Bento systems

7 Discovery at Illinois Evolved from federated search through web-scale discovery to bento (hybrid aggregated and federated) Bento boxes for: article results (EBSCO and Scopus), online catalog, recommended additional A&I targets (with results), subject specialists and departmental library links, other targets, Library web site results, advertising (8 partitioned areas)

8 Illinois Transaction Log Analysis
July 2016 – June 2017 (latest) 1.49 million searches, 1.15 million clickthroughs High number of words per query – 5.11 (up from 3.76 & 4.11) 10% are one word, 24.7% > 7 words, 49.2% were <= 3 words Large number of cut-and-paste of title, author/title, full citations DOI searches (73 searches per day) Heavy reliance on the article literature Known-item searching is high = 56% Users often have a material type in mind when they search Use of search assistance high Limit operations using Gateway tabs to material types used = 24%

9 Bento features Employs context-specific and adaptive search assistance
Spelling suggestion links, Libguide links, direct links for frequent searches, limit suggestions, DOI identification, online chat link, journal title links Direct link to PDF where available; DOI, publisher, SFX links for articles, e-book links from catalog Altmetric badges Writes out custom transaction logs

10 EBSCO EDS API Using 50 targets: ASU, other EBSCOs, ISI, Scopus, Networked ETDs, patents Replaced the separate EBSCO and Scopus bento search partitions Using persistent session token when it exists, otherwise create and use

13 EBSCO EDS API Like: Working on:
PDF links are propagated to all target records Rich links provided in API, e.g. to Scopus record, publisher sites, DOI links Full citation search is outstanding Aggregated targets include non-EBSCO A&Is Working on: The order of precedence of duplicate target matches Duplicate records The optimum number of targets Relevancy ranking

19 Bento Observations Have Local control and customization
Features sets vary; many bento versions do not do spell checking and do not provide direct links from the bento display page to full-text Only three employ the one-click to full-text w/p going through local link resolver Have Local control and customization But, requires programming/server staff and maintenance … API processing Need for catalog item availability and direct links to ebooks

20 Bento Clickthroughs by Category
User Clickthroughs by Category Percentages Article links 56.1% OPACs and Books 33.6% Full-text clicks 16.6% Suggestions 9.2% Journal Title links 3.6% Library links or contacts 0.2%
