THERMAL HYDROLYSIS 1 Pre-treatment for anaerobic digestion in which both the complex molecular chains and the cell structure of the biomass are broken down. 2 The process is carried out on centrifuged secondary sludge at a high temperature of °C and a pressure of 7-10 bar for short residence times (15-30 min) on centrifuged secondary sludge. THERMAL HYDROLYSIS ADVANTAGES •Continuous operation, permitting the previous volume of the sludge silo to be minimised, and thus a more compact facility. •Works with a very low reactor residence time (15-30 min), permitting a more compact facility. •Exclusively designed Flash valve can be used to increase cell break down, thus improving the efficiency of the process. •Uses direct heat transfers, which optimise the energy efficiency of the system and thus avoid maintenance problems generated by exchangers working with sludge. •Mixture of hydrolysed secondary sludge and primary sludge before entering the digester, without requiring dilution. • It can be fed with 16% sludge, thus producing savings in the subsequent dewatering process (polyelectrolytes, energy, maintenance). A Variable Frequency Drive (VFD) is a type of motor controller that drives an electric motor by varying the frequency and voltage supplied to the electric motor. Variable frequency drive is an adjustable speed drive. Other names for a VFD are variable speed drive, adjustable speed drive, adjustable frequency drive, AC drive, micro drive, and inverter. BIOMASS to ENERGY Many Plants do use actually heat and energy source on Natural gas and fossil fuels. However, Sludge is a byproduct in wastewater treatment process and is suitable for energy production. Dewatered Sludge can be additional economical value for complete sludge removal. Sludge Cake (%18-22 DM content) needs further to be downsited for its volume by drying. The energy produced for drying by ingeneration dried sludge flakes (%90 DM content) is ingenerated and thus the thermal energy used for drying and electrical energy production. EQUIPMENT PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENT
Facilities should regularly evaluate the condition, performance and remaining useful life of process equipment. Aging equipment is more inefficient, can be costly to repair, and typically requires more energy than newer models. Given that the process that consumes that largest amount of energy in a wastewater treatment plant is the aeration step, this should be a starting point for efficiencies. STAFF-EDUCATION-VALUE
Educating treatment system operators in the relationship between energy efficiency and facility operations is key to meeting energy targets and finding new opportunities for efficiency. Engaging operators in the process by asking for input results in efficiency measures being suggested and embraced. After all, throughout all stages in the facility, it’s the staff that are dealing with the processes every day and this is invaluable insight.
