In the same way that we are not all going to fit into or like the same jumper in this room, Postmodernists argue that just because two families are both middle class they won’t automatically have the same set up or be like each other. They also point out that there will be a wide variety of family types and set ups with in one ethnic group.

Judith Stacey suggests that a single individual will experience a variety of family structures throughout their life span and that there is no dominant type of family in contemporary society

9. Key theorists: Pakulski & Walters
Pakulski & Walters state that in contemporary society the roles people take on in a family are a matter of choice, not obligation and that traditional gender roles are no longer fixed. They argue that the roles we take on are influenced by the media and advertising
