1 THE MINING INDUSTRY BY : SAM S, MELISSA, ABBEY, RILEY AND LIAM M

2 MINE TAILINGS A HOW THEY ARE STORED
MINE TAILINGS ARE WASTE MATERIAL THAT GETS LEFT BEHIND AFTER VALUABLE METALS ARE TAKEN FROM THE GROUND. THE TAILINGS ARE THEN ERODED INTO SMALL SECTIONS AND SENT DOWNSTREAM WHERE IT IS COLLECTED BY A SUMP. THE TAILINGS ARE THEN TAKEN FROM THE SUMP AND MOVED TO A TAILING IMPOUD.

3 MINING INDUSTRY CONTRIBUTES TO THE ACID RAIN PROBLEM
LITTLE PARTICLES OF POLLUTION IS RELEASED BY CARS, TRUCKS AND BUSES THAT ARE BURNING DIESEL FUEL, FERTILIZERS, PESTITODESS, ROAD CONSTRUCTION, STEEL MAKING, MINING, AND TURNIING ON FIRE PLACES. IT ALSO CONTRIIBUTES BECAUSE MINING PRODUCES A LOT OF AIR AND LAND POLLUTION.

4 !MINING IN ACTION!

5 THE ORE WHAT IS AN ORE? AN ORE IS A NATURALLY OCCURRING SOLID MATERIAL FROM WHICH A METAL OR VALUEABLE MINERAL CAN BE PROFITABLY EXTRACTED. AN ORE IS ALSO A NON-RENEWABLE RESOURCE

6 ORE MINERALS WHAT ARE THE ORE MINERALS?
CHROMIUM, LEAD, MERCURY, BARIUM, ZINC, TIN, GOLD, COPPER, PLATINUM, URANIUM, LITHIUM, STONTIUM, NIOBIUM, MANGANESE, ARSENIC, ANTIMONY, NICKEL, TITANIUM, VANADINIUM, AND MOLYBDENUM

7 THE PROCESS OF MILLING HOW DOES MILLING WORK? HOW DOES IT PROCESS?
MILLING IS THE MOST COMMON FORM OF MACHINING. IT IS A MATERIAL REMOVAL PROCESS WHICH CAN CREATE A VARIETY OF FEATURES ON A PART. THIS IS DONE BY CUTTING AWAY ALL OF THE UNWANTED MATERIAL. MILLING IS TYPICALLY USED TO PRODUCE PARTS THAT ARE NOT AXIALLY SYMMETRIC AND HAVE MANY FEATURES. SUCH AS, HOLES, SLOTS, POCKETS AND EVEN THREE-DIMENSIONAL SURFACE CONTOURS

8 THE PROCESS OF SMELTING
HOW DOES SMELTING WORK? SMELTING IS THE PROCESS OF SEPARATING THE METAL FROM IMPURITIES BY HEATING THE CONCENTRATE TO A HIGH TEMPERATURE TO CAUSE THE METAL TO MELT. SMELTING THE CONCENTRATE PRODUCES A METAL OR A HIGH-GRADE METALLIC MIXTURE ALONG WITH A SOLID WASTE PRODUCT CALLED SLAG

12 THE BAD THINGS ABOUT MINING
WHAT ARE THE DISADVANTAGES OF MINING? MINING IS VERY BAD FOR THE LUNGS IT IS VERY DANGEROUS BECAUSE THE BLASTS CAN COLLAPSE THE MINE AND CAN KILL OR SERIOUSLY INJURE MINERS. IT IS NOT A VERY FAVORABLE JOB IT IS VERY EXPENSIVE MAINTAING THE MINES, AND PAYING FOR ALL THE MACHINES ECT THE MINERS NEVER KNOW IF THEY HAE MISSED ANY. IT ALSO CAUSES A LOT OF ENVIROMENTAL DAMAGE

13 THE BEST THING ABOUT MINING
MINERS MINE AND FIND MINERALS(ORE-S) THE MINERALS GO THROUGH MANY PROCESSES THE MINERALS TURN INTO METALS THE METALS MAKE MACHINES THE MACHINES HELP US IN MANY WAYS AND MAKE THINGS WE SELL IT OR USE THE THING IT MADE(CARS, HOUSES) NEXT
