1 Microscopes in Depth Fall 2017
Microscopes & You Microscopes in Depth Fall 2017

2 Microscopes What we use! Magnifies organisms Types:
Light Microscopes Electron Microscopes MUCH higher magnification Most powerful! Scanning (SEM) & Transmission (TEM) Magnification – increase in apparent size Resolution –helps with clarity

3 Ocular lens (Eyepiece) Body Tube
Nosepiece Arm Objectives Stage Stage Clips Coarse Adjustment Diaphragm Fine Adjustment Light Always carry a microscope with one hand holding the arm and one hand under the base. Base

4 Structures & Function Microscope Part Function(s) Eyepiece
Contains the ocular lens; has a magnification of 10X Revolving Nosepiece Holds the high- and low- power objective lenses; can be rotated to change magnification. Objective Lenses There are three magnification lens: scanning (4X), low (10X), and high power (40X). Stage Clips Holds the slide in place. Stage Supports the slide as it is being viewed. Light Source Projects light upwards through the diaphragm, the specimen (what you’re looking at), and through the lenses Diaphragm Regulates the amount of light on the specimen.

5 Structures & Function Pt. 2
Microscope Part Function(s) Arm Supports the entire microscope. Fine Adjustment Knob Moves the stage slightly to sharpen the image. Coarse Adjustment Knob Moves the stage up and down for focusing. Base Used to support the microscope when carried.

7 CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING!
What knob would you use to enhance magnification? What knob would you use to enhance resolution? COARSE ADJUSTMENT KNOB FINE ADJUSTMENT KNOB

8 Comparing Powers of Magnification
We can see better details with higher the powers of magnification, but we cannot see as much of the image. Which of these images would be viewed at a higher power of magnification?

9 Calculating Magnification
Eyepiece = 10x Objective Scanning = 4x (shortest in length) Low Power = 10x High Power = 40x (longest) Magnification = Eyepiece x Objective Field of view measured in microns KNOW PARTS OF MICROSCOPE AND WHAT THEY DO!!

10 Power of Magnification
Band Color Objective Power Eyepiece Lens Power Power of Magnification Red 4x 10x Yellow Blue 40x 40x 100x 400x
