Welcome to today’s Enriching Experiences icebreaker. We’re going to take a few minutes to learn a little more about each other and a little more about one of the Enriching Experiences that you may have heard about as part of the UTEP Edge.

Study Abroad / Study Away Definition
Academic experiences – either individually or with a group – in a setting different from UTEP either domestic or abroad. Today we’re going to do an icebreaker about Study Abroad / Study Away. When I say “Study Abroad / Study Away” as an Enriching or High Impact Experience – what do you think of? That’s right, you study someplace away from El Paso either in the U.S. (for Study Away) or in another country for Study Abroad. Has anyone here ever studied Abroad or Away? [If yes, ask a few other questions such as, where did you go? Was it terrific? ]

Today’s objectives: Define Study Abroad / Study Away Connect your talents to Study Abroad / Study Away for Lifelong Success Find Study Abroad / Study Away opportunities for you at UTEP Here’s what we want to accomplish in the next few minutes. Will you read the first one? Thanks. We’ve done that – defined Study Abroad / Study Away. Will you read the second one? Thanks. So, start thinking about your talents, your strengths, your skills and how they contribute to you finding and learning about Study Abroad / Study Away opportunities then how they will contribute to your lifelong success. And, will you read number 3 for us? Thanks. So, we’ll finish up with finding some Study Abroad / Study Away opportunities through UTEP that you can join.

Study Abroad / Study Away Icebreaker
Would You Rather? Ask your partner: Would you rather study abroad in (one from the blue box) or (one from the orange box)? Why??? China Czech Republic England Finland Austria South Korea Spain Ecuador Poland Russia Brazil Argentina Fiji South Africa Canada Belgium Mexico Switzerland Italy New Zealand Thailand Dominican Republic Bhutan Egypt Kuwait South Korea Costa Rica Ireland France Australia Indonesia Japan Morocco Portugal Germany Sweden Cuba Chile Peru Columbia Turkey Finland Jordan Greece Russia India Netherlands Venezuela Greece Guatemala Nicaragua Ghana OK, now for today’s activity. [Paraphrase the slide instructions.] Get in groups of 2 or 3. Ask each other, “Would you rather Study Abroad in (one from the blue box) or in (one from the orange box)? Why do you want to go there? What do think you’ll see there? Learn there? How do you think the food is? The language? The weather? The culture? [Let them talk for a few minutes, ask if they have switched and have the other person ask. If time, have them re-group and do it again.]

Study Abroad Office, 203 Union East Departments and Colleges: Engineering, Business and Liberal Arts have many major based opportunities Talk with your instructor, academic advisor, or campus employer about ideas for this experience. Talk with your friends who have studied abroad – they’ll tell you how wonderful (and affordable) it can be So, that’s an introduction to Study Abroad / Study Away at UTEP. There are many ways to get involved at UTEP that will add to your personal satisfaction, your professional development, and lifelong success. This is another one. Thanks.
