Blerina Gkotse, Maurice Glaser, Georgi Gorine, Ugur Kilic, Isidre Mateu, Giuseppe Pezzullo, Federico Ravotti EP-DT-DD section meeting 17/03/2017

2 Outline The RADMON project EP-DT RADMON reader Tests in IRRAD
Conclusions

3 The RADMON project RadFET RADMON carrier board pin diode TID [Gy]
Project born to fulfill radiation damage monitoring needs in the LHC experiments. Characterization of several sensor types (F.Ravotti PhD thesis1,2006) to measure total ionizing dose (TID) and fluence. 4 devices selected (2 radFET, 2 pin diodes) & design of a carrier board. Easy readout schema  for all devices, dosimetry information can be obtained injecting a current pulse and measuring the voltage. RadFET TID [Gy] RADMON carrier board pin diode Φeq [neq/cm2] IR -Vo IR Vo 1Development and Characterisation of Radiation Monitoring Sensors for the High Energy Physics Experiments of the CERN LHC Accelerator; F.Ravotti, 2006.

4 The RADMON project (II)
~250 RADMON boards installed in the experiments and LHC tunnel (complex, distributed readout integrated in the DCS) IRRAD team provides replacement sensors to the LHC but also to other experiments from CERN and outside The dosimeters can be used as passive devices (offline readout using a dedicated testbench in IRRAD) RADMON board installed on a TOTEM roman pot TOTEM readout system Dosimetry results in PHENIX experiment (BNL)

5 EP-DT RADMON reader Need for a portable readout system providing an on-line measurement Development of a compact, low cost system started more than 10 years ago, with successive contributions from different students The system exploits the full range of operation of all RADMON dosimeters Last year a ”proof of concept” prototype was successfully tested in IRRAD Laboratory test-bench Portable EP-DT RADMON reader

6 EP-DT RADMON reader capabilities
Example: RADMON BPW sensor calibration curve ∆V [V] Operational range Current supply 100 μA – 32 mA Voltage readout 0 – 125 V Min. pulse width 100 ms EP-DT RADMON reader (125V) 100 LHC readout (30V) Full operational range 10 One order of magnitude gain in φeq readout range with respect to the LHC system! 1 Φeq [neq/cm2] 1013 1014 1015 2 x 1014 > 1015

7 EP-DT RADMON reader architecture
Total number of channels: 4 x 11

8 Towards a first prototype…
Full characterization of the power supply unit to validate it against the readout protocols defined for every dosimeter Basic web interface to remotely configure data acquisition and storage Assembly of a prototype and tests in IRRAD (2016) and GIF++ (ongoing) Interface – profile manager Interface – readout configuration

9 Tests in (irradiation 2016)
Main purpose: proof of concept and debugging of the system Comparison of final dose with passive dosimeters RADMON board Patch panel Passive dosimeters Control room 1 BPW In beam Beam area System prototype Beam Device TID after 35 days [Gy] RADMON reader (REM) 170 ± 15% RPL 205 ± 20%

10 Results out of dosimeter range REM250-K3 RadFET
Low sensitivity, broad range TID[Gy] SEC ( x 107) (Preliminary) Time [days] Si-2 pin diode High sensitivity, short range Φeq[neq/cm2] SEC ( x 107) out of dosimeter range Time [days]

11 Low sensitivity, broad range
Results – BPW in beam BPW pin diode Low sensitivity, broad range (Preliminary) No annealing correction Better fit possible Φeq[neq/cm2] SEC ( x 107) Time [days]

12 Conclusions Portable RADMON reader development is ongoing in IRRAD
Proof of concept validated last year in IRRAD KT fund proposal to be defended next week Future steps System optimization New test during irradiation campaign 2017 Further development of the web interface Integration of all the parts in a compact housing with a single PCB

13 The team thanks you for your attention!!!
