3 Character Counts: Food for Thought
A little girl named Hoa moves to America from Vietnam with her father and siblings to escape the extreme poverty they were living in. They could not afford to bring her mother along but are hopeful that she can come later. When she begins attending her new school, she is often teased for her language and dress. One boy, named Raymond, regularly taunts her and one day she fights back and both are sent to the principal’s office. The principal orders the two angry children to complete an unusual assignment. The girl must tell her tormentor about Vietnam and the boy must listen carefully and write it down. This leads to a friendship between the two and eventually involves the whole school coming together for a fundraiser to help reunite the family with Hoa’s mother. How does this story illustrate the importance of listening and how our viewpoints about others change if we take the time to understand them better? Is this part of why bullies bully? Wilson, 2014

4 TOP 10 TIPS FOR DRUG PREVENTION 10/26
Be a Role Model and Set a Positive Example:  Don’t forget, what you do is more important than what you say!  You are setting the foundation and direction for your life; where are you headed? Plan Ahead:  As you make plans for the party or going out with friends you need to plan ahead.  You need to protect yourself and be smart.  Don’t become a victim of someone else’s alcohol or drug use.  Make sure that there is someone you can call, day or night, no matter what, if you need them.  And, do the same for your friends.
