8 Graduation Requirements
1) Earn 220 Credits 2) Pass Subjects Required History 30 credits/3 years English 40 credits/4 years P.E 20 credits/2 years Math Science 20: 1 year Biological 1 year Physical World Language* Visual & Performing Arts* Applied Arts* 10 credits - Optional *Must complete 30 credits using at least 2 out of 3 categories General Elective 60 credits Review grad requirements line by line with examples Example of 30 unit requirement on next page TOTAL REQUIRED = 220 CREDITS 8

9 Important Academic Facts
Each semester, a passed class earns 5 credits; For the year, a passed class earns 10 credits A minimum of a D- is required to earn credits towards graduation; colleges require a minimum of C. Failed classes earn no credits, but are calculated in the GPA as a zero and remain on the transcript.

10 Progress Reports SchoolLoop & mailed home (6 weeks & 12 weeks)
Grades measure academic performance Grades used for sports/extracurricular eligibility Only semester grades appear on the transcript and credits go towards graduation requirement Permanent record of high school academic performance. The students immediate answer was School Loop – yes, this is the first year used for progress report grades – a report card was still mailed home last week. If not already registered for School Loop, instruction card on back table. 2 progress reports and final grades – permanent grades at the end of each semester What is a transcript? Letter grades represent comprehension of the material being taught – are you getting it?

11 Attendance Truants, unexcused absences & tardies will impact a student’s ability to succeed in high school. Being in class = success Absences must be cleared within 3 days Parents must call the 24-hour Attendance Hotline at to clear an absence Deans area of expertise – so will just touch on – also refer to the Prospect Planner (show planner) Excused absence: work may be made up – Illness, doctor or dentist appts, bereavement… Truant absences: no make up work allowed for credit. The final grade is lowered 1/3 for each truant absence. missing school without a excused reason an absence with no reason given to the school becomes truant after 3 days Unexcused absence: no make up work may be allowed for credit. After 3 unexcused absences, the final grade is lowered by 1/3 for each unexcused absence unexcused tardy – over 10 minutes late unexcused absence – shopping, weather, babysitting, missing a bus, oversleeping… Parents are requested to call before 10:30 AM on the same day of the absence.

A) Social Science 2 years B) English 4 years C) Math 3 years: IM1 – IM2 – IM3 (UC: 4 yrs rec)  D) Lab Science 2 years: (UC: 3 years rec) 1 year Biological & 1 year Physical E) World Language 2 yrs same language (UC:3 yrs rec) F) Visual & Performing Arts 1 year G) College Prep Elective Must earn C’s or better to satisfy requirement. If you earn a D or F, see your Guidance Advisor for options to validate.

14 Academic Importance A ‘D’ or ‘F’ earned in an UC/CSU A-G Subject requirement may need to be repeated to apply to 4-year university. Validation. Credits earned outside Prospect are entered on the Prospect transcript if needed to graduate. (e.g.; community college class or online class)

PSAT - practice SAT ACT Composite Total = 36 English, Math, Reading, and Science – Essay (Optional) SAT Reasoning Composite Total = 1600 Critical Reading & Math – Essay (Optional) SAT Subject Test No longer required by UC or CSU may be recommended or required for certain private colleges, majors…

16 College Admissions Test Requirements
ACT – SAT Reasoning – SAT Subject Test – Tests typically taken during the spring semester of junior year. They can also be taken during the fall of senior year.

College applications Community service based Scholarships Meaningful activities Prolonged commitment Leadership roles Keep track of community service hours, duties and dates (NOT a graduation requirement)
