What is Belmont Drives Electric?
We are a community program for Belmont residents sponsored by the Belmont Energy Committee, Belmont Light, Sustainable Belmont, and Belmont EV enthusiasts. Goal – to promote the use of EVs throughout town and to encourage EV owners to “charge smart” in order to reduce our town’s impact on the environment. How? – by providing you with all the knowledge and tools necessary to decide whether driving electric is right for you and your family.

Goals in Belmont Climate Action Plan (2007):
Reduce Greenhouse Gas Emissions 80% by 2050 75% Belmont Citizens voted for it Green Community Designation (2014): Reduce emissions 20% in 5 years Achieved to-date (2007 to 2014): 5% CO2 reduction Not enough!!!

Vehicles cause most of Belmont’s CO2 emissions
- more than 1/3 of all emissions almost half of all residential emissions

How has Belmont done so far?
According to the State’s EV website: 58 Electric Vehicles purchased or leased by Belmont residents in the past year – that’s more than any other locality in Massachusetts. 100 EVs purchased or leased by Belmont residents since the State EV program began in June 2014. 3 public dual-port EV chargers installed in Belmont – all free of charge. 3 Town-owned EVs added to Belmont’s fleet.

As you may know, Sierra Club is the nation’s oldest and largest grassroots environmental organization with more than 3 million members and supporters, chapters in all 50 states, and campaigns focused on a number of pressing issues. We have a huge reach, from our lawyers suing big polluters, to our policy analysts and lobbyists advocating for legislation at the state and federal levels, to our sophisticated communications team. Far and away, Sierra Club gets more media coverage than any other environmental group –and not just in the Washington Post and Boston Globe, but in local outlets around the country where our chapters have thousands of spokespeople. Our biggest strength, in addition to our brand and reputation, is our army of activists in every pocket of the US who are fighting environmental threats and pushing for a 100% clean energy future. This is a photo of my boss getting arrested at the White House to protest the Keystone XL Pipeline, together with other leaders like Andrew Young and Bill McKibben.

America pays a heavy price for the oil in our vehicles.
Transportation accounts for one third of global warming emissions in the US, and motor vehicles are the greatest contributor to atmospheric warming . and most of these emissions come from the millions of barrels of oil used every day by people in their cars, SUVs and pick-up trucks. Each year, American passenger cars and trucks spew 1.4 billion tons of CO2 into the air. - We send more than half a billion dollars abroad every day to pay for oil, mostly supplied by nations at high risk of instability. The Army did a study and found that out of every 24 fuel convoys we used [in Afghanistan], a soldier or marine is killed or wounded guarding that convoy. That's a high price to pay for fuel. –US Navy Secretary Roy Mabus 8

or Electric vehicles make a big impact.
In just 8 months on the road, a switch to 1 million EVs will save as much oil as was released in the BP Gulf disaster. or This slide sometimes helps people see Evs in more tangible terms.

What is a hybrid vs plug-in hybrid vs full battery electric?

EVs Present Clear Pathway to Climate Goals
Raise your hand if you wondered if EVs were actually better for the environment because our electricity comes from a bunch of coal and natural gas? Even on today’s electricity sources, EVs are cleaner than conventional vehicles –in fact 30-60% cleaner here in MA. And EVs get even cleaner over time as we shift to more renewable sources of power.
12
Now is time for optimism and acceleration.
We know that electric vehicles will be one key way to slash emissions in the US. Fortunately, there are more than 30 EVs on the market in the US and more coming every year. EVs are also gaining market share much faster than hybrids did when they first came on the market. And they are getting longer range, like this Chevy Bolt, which gets 238 miles per charge. Last year EV sales in the US were 37% higher than the they were the previous year, despite low gasoline prices. With new models like the Bolt now on the market and all our efforts to promote EVs, this year EV sales should accelerateeven faster.
