The Concept Thus far we have primarily focused on basic arithmetic and translating phrases and sentences into expressions and equations or inequalities Today we’re going to take the latter topic one step further and also introduce 4 formulas upon which we will rely for quite some time.
5
Word Problem Strategies
We’re going to briefly discuss a methodology for solving word problems Read the problem Underline the question Develop a plan to solve the problem Reread the question to write down pertinent numbers Write equation/inequality Solve Check your answer/ Does it make sense Apply units
6
Example You are making a book cover. You need a rectangular piece of leather that is 11 inches by 18 inches. Find the cost of the piece if leather costs 25 cents per square inch. Axis of symmetry Vertex

On Your Own A diver uses a sonar device to determine the distance to her diving partner. The device sends a sound wave and records the time it takes for the wave to reach the diving partner and return to the device. Suppose the wave travels at a rate of about 4800 feet per second. The wave returns .2 second after it was sent. How far did the wave travel? Axis of symmetry Vertex

Additional Formulas pg. 30
In addition to our basic problem solving steps, we also need to discuss four simple equations that are utilized throughout this course, but also all of life. These can be found on page 30 Temperature Distance Simple Interest Profit
9
Example You’re talking to a friend from Germany about the crazy August KC weather. You tell her that it was 62o last night. To help her understand, you tell her that it converts to what temperature in Celsius? Axis of symmetry Vertex

On Your Own A car travels at an average speed of 60 miles per hour on a four hour and 30 minute trip to St. Louis. Approximately how far away is St. Louis from Kansas City? Axis of symmetry Vertex
11
On Your Own What is the interest accrued on an initial investment of $500 at a 4% rate over the course of 5 years. Axis of symmetry Vertex
12
On Your Own Sue borrows $1500 from the bank. Her loan’s interest rate is 7% over the course of 3 years. How much total does she end up paying back to the bank? Axis of symmetry Vertex
13
On Your Own Algebraic Toys creates a line of Mathematician action figures. If the Income from the toy’s is $15000 but the expenses to produce the figures is $13955, how much profit does Algebraic Toys bring in? Axis of symmetry Vertex
