Complete all the tasks to the best of your ability. Ask, in plenty of time, if you need help with any of the tasks. Work independently wherever possible. All work should be your own. Proof-read this booklet before you hand it in to your teacher. Check the quality of work and amount of effort your child has put into this booklet. Where guided, please assess the Commitment to Learning of one task. The descriptors are below. Contact the teacher in good time via if there are problems handing the work in on time. Provide support, guidance and an environment to learn so your child makes the most of these tasks. Fill in any out of school activities/ plans you have to ensure you can fit your schedule around the successful completion of this booklet. If you need help with a task from an adult or a peer make sure you have arranged this in the timetable too. 2 Task Introduction to Africa Expected Outcome Assess prior knowledge of the African continent, develop a focus for upcoming homework tasks. Skills Audit Geographic enquiry, place knowledge Below is an outline map of the African continent. The aim is to illustrate this map with information that you already know about Africa. This could be; Borders of countries and the location of capitals, cities, rivers, mountains or other human/physical features Images that spring to mind when you think of Africa Images of the natural life of Africa Any facts or figures you know about the continent Make it as colourful and attractive as possible. 4 3 Task Africa countries and capitals. Expected Outcome Develop your place knowledge of African countries and capitals. Skills Audit Place knowledge, map study, revision technique. Firstly, use maps online or from an atlas to learn as many of the countries and capitals of Africa, as well as their locations. To test how your knowledge is developing, you can use; Then get a parent or guardian to time you for 20 minutes as you attempt to label the map below with the names of countries and capitals. 5 4 Task Create a physical map of Africa. Expected Outcome
You will create a detailed map of the continent showing the key physical features of the continent. This will be supported by the addition of a clear key. Skills Audit Data presentation, map reading and drawing. Use this page to create a map of the physical geography of Africa. Look to include features such as rivers, deserts, rainforests, mountains and deltas. Ensure you use colour and create an accompanying key. Key Challenge task:  Research the story of the search for the source of the River Nile.

6 5 Task What does Chimamanda Adichie mean by the danger of a single story? Expected Outcome You should build an understanding of how the impressions people have of places can develop. Skills Audit Video analysis, note taking, cultural awareness. Watch the TED talk by Chimamanda Adichie about the ‘single story’ of Africa and then answer the questions below. Take notes on scrap paper as you watch to help. What is meant by the ‘single story’ of Africa? What images/ideas do many people have of Africa? What is wrong with their image of the African continent? How can we challenge this view of the continent? What question would you ask Chimamanda Adichie? Challenge task: Ask your friends and family what they think of when they think of ‘Africa’? Which books, films and music might play a role in what they think?

7 6 Task Find a positive news story about Africa. Expected Outcome You will present and analyse a news article about a positive event or process to have taken place in an African country. Skills Audit Research, vocabulary extension, textual analysis Your task is to use the internet to find a positive news story about a place or country in Africa. The news story must be from the past month. You must then answer the questions about the news story in the box on the right. Print out and stick the news story in the box below. Add pictures if you have space. Which website did you get this news story first? Who will benefit from this story and how? Why don’t many positive news stories from Africa make the headlines in the UK? Self Check Box – what Commitment to Learning score would you give yourself for this task? Challenge task:  Discuss the story with your parents /guardians over dinner or whilst on a car journey. How did they respond?

8 7 Similarities between the two Differences
Task Country comparison and contrast Expected Outcome You will examine the similarities and differences between two African countries to build an awareness of the geographical differences across this continent. Skills Audit Research, data categorisation, statistical analysis, referencing. Your task is to compare South Sudan and Gabon and complete the table below. You must use a variety of sources of information, from websites such as the BBC and the CIA world factbook to encyclopedias and books from the LRC. Make a note of where you found each piece of information that you used e.g. ‘BBC News website’. 9 8 Task The legacy of the 2010 World Cup. Expected Outcome Assess the lasting impact of the 2010 football World Cup in South Africa and decide whether or not it was beneficial for the country and continent. Skills Audit Research, argument construction, letter writing. In 2010, South Africa hosted the World Cup. It was the first time that and African country has ever hosted the football world cup. Your task is to discover whether hosting the World Cup had a positive or negative impact on South Africa. Summarise your findings in a letter to Jacob Zuma, the South African President. Dear Mr Zuma Having conducted thorough research, I believe that the 2010 World Cup had a positive/negative (delete as appropriate) impact upon South Africa. 10 9 Task Flag design. Expected Outcome Design a new flag for Mozambique.
Skills Audit Graphic design. Mozambique’s current flag. Mozambique’s flag is known as one of the world’s worst flags- primarily because it features a gun, which hardly gives the best impression of the country. Your task is to design a new flag that better represents the culture, life and traditions of Mozambique. For advice, research how New Zealand have gone about designing a new flag to represent their country. Remember- the best flag designs are often the most simple. Design your flag here; Explain your flag design here Challenge task:  Which African country has the best flag?

10 Task Apply what you have learnt about Africa. Expected Outcome Explain a range of arguments to support a statement about the future for the African continent. Skills Audit Summarising learning, writing to support a hypothesis. “Africa will be the world’s most important continent in the coming century.” Do you agree with this statement? (12) Explain a range of reasons you agree and disagree with statement. Write a maximum of 400 words. Challenge task: Research Chinese investment in Africa. Teacher Check Box – Commitment to Learning. 12 Task 10 Mark Scheme 1-4 A one-sided argument with generic statements related to the continent. No supporting evidence Poor spelling, punctuation and grammar. 5-8 Both sides of the argument considered and explanation as to why Africa will and will not be the most important continent is included. A very simplistic and generalised conclusion. Some evidence used to support points but it may be limited to naming places without further exemplification Good spelling, punctuation and grammar. Some keywords used appropriately. 9-12 Both sides of the argument are considered and arguments for why Africa will and will not be the most important continent are clearly explained. A conclusion clearly explains the extent to which Africa will be the most important continent. Evidence is used to support all points. Good spelling, punctuation and grammar. Keywords used appropriately throughout.
