Schematic representation of the Mandarin version of Language Screening Test (MLAST) validation process. Each of the enrolled acute(with new stoke in three days) and chronic(10 days after new stroke onset) patients completed the tests of MLAST-a and MLAST-b, and the equivalence between the 2 versions and the internal validity(item analysis, reliability, and factor structure) of each version were assessed in the acute and chronic patients; two examiners were required to give marks simultaneously to the same version 111 the acute stroke patients, and time-taken to accomplish the test was recorded meanwhile, then inter-rater reliability and median time-taken of MLAST were calculated from the acute stroke patients; external validity with respect to Western Aphasia Battery were calculated from the chronic patients (enrolled chronic patients were asked to complete the WAB followed by MLAST-a and MLAST-b on the same day, and WAB and MLAST were administered by 2 different and blinded examiners).
