4 What is Movin’ and Groovin’?
DCL - Movin' and Groovin' Created: 7/24/2015 What is Movin’ and Groovin’? Our definition Dance Movement Fun Several years ago we did a story time that was called let’s move. I noticed that most kids just loved it. I did some research on movement and story time and learned there were lots of great benefits. I proposed it in the middle of the year; unheard of. And it was approved. The biggest complaint we received is that there was only one a month. The goal is for children to move and have fun.

5 Benefits State of Children’s Health
DCL - Movin' and Groovin' Created: 7/24/2015 Benefits State of Children’s Health Children watch on average 35 hours of TV a week One in every three children is obese Michelle Obama launched website Let’s Move Many great sources of information HealthyChildren.org Medline Plus Parents In 2013 Nickelodeon did a study to present to advertisers that children watch an average of 35 hours of TV per week. That is a 2.2 hour increase from the 2009 study. Although Nickelodeon and advertisers were happy, this should be a concern for parents. According to the “Let’s Move” website “over the past three decades, childhood obesity rates in America have tripled, and today, nearly one in three children in America are overweight or obese.” Also, the rate is higher for African American and Hispanic children where ~40% are considered obese. Obesity is based on BMI index. Overweight is defined as a BMI at or above the 85th percentile and below the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex. Obesity is defined as a BMI at or above the 95th percentile for children and teens of the same age and sex. BMI is calculated by dividing a person's weight in kilograms by the square of height in meters. The website says that “children need 60 minutes of play with moderate to vigorous activity every day to grow up to a healthy weight.” I read this in other literature as well. 11 Sue’s Movin’ and Groovin’
DCL - Movin' and Groovin' Created: 7/24/2015 Sue’s Movin’ and Groovin’ Intro: I explain the benefits of Movin’ and Groovin’ Set 1: 3 songs Book 1: Funny / interactive Set 2: 3 songs Book 2: Funny / interactive Set 3: 3 songs with tactile object If there’s time: 1 song with bubbles I play 3 songs in each set. The last song of each set is a song that encourages sitting down. Funny book – Laughter increases white blood cell activity and changes the chemical balance of the blood. This is believed to boost the body’s production of chemicals needed for alertness and memory. Or a book that requires interaction; I Spy, Giant pop ups, Don’t push the button Laughter reduces stress, and low stress enhances the brain’s receptivity to learning. AND studies show laughter boosts the body’s immune system for three days – the day of the fun and the next two. For bubbles I have everyone get in a circle and sit down. Need kids to follow you, get a bubble machine. Experience showed me that if I did not have them sit, the bigger more rambunctious children run over the little and meek ones. Since we have a large group, I use two bubble machines. My volunteer and I start at different ends. I use a variety of songs. My favorite right now is Ringo’s children’s version of Octopus Garden.
