Monday 9-19 Do Now: mini grid/box warm up on handout
Aim: How can you scale your final composition of the still life to final copy paper? Do Now: mini grid/box warm up on handout HW: Part 1: In your sketchbook, fill two pages with a total of 6 sketches of different still life arrangements from places around your home. Draw each sketch with a background, middle ground and foreground. Sketches can be done with only line. Part 2: Select ONE of your sketches, draw it on a third sketchbook page, scaled large enough to fill most of the page of your paper *you can leave a white boarder. Fully shade this drawing to represent light and shadow.

Tuesday 9-20 Aim: What shading techniques and drawing tools can be used to render light and shadow in your still life? Do Now: Create a small value scale in your sketchbook using the graphite pencils in your set. Which is the lightest/darkest pencil that you have? Pencil techniques to consider:
Use a soft pencil and create a patch of layered graphite. Pick up graphite with a tissue and smudge onto your paper to lightly fill an area with a value. Use your eraser to erase away highlights. Use a soft pencil to add back in shadows. Use subtractive techniques to erase highlights out from the surface, instead of trying to leave white space. Kneaded erasers stamp out soft highlights. Use an ebony pencil for very dramatic dark areas.

Look for CONTRASTING shapes of values and get rid of outline!
SHADE in the direction of the objects surface.

Rendering folds: Shade in the shape of the shadow! Do not just draw a line and smudge away from the line. Shade in the direction of the fold.
