Blue Whale What is the ‘Blue Whale Game’?
In the last month many media outlets have reported on the so called ‘Blue Whale Game’ phenomenon which has been claimed to be responsible for a number of teenager’s deaths in Russia. Through research and consultation with other colleagues it has come to our attention that the ‘Blue Whale Game’ is an example of a sensationalised fake news story. Snopes, the online fact checking website, have found that although there have been reports of young people committing suicide in Russia over the last six months, of these reported cases none have been found to have a conclusive tie to the game.
8
Scenario A child in your Year 7 class becomes visibly upset during a research activity in your lesson. Talking with them after class you discover that they have seen some extremist content during the lesson. You report it to the DSP. What action would you expect to happen?
9
Considerations Are the ages of the children significant?
Does this need referral to the DSP and beyond? What external agency (if any) would you expect to be involved? What internal processes may be required? Do the children involved require support? What could that be? Do you need to inform the parents?
