PROBLEMS/CHALLENGES
FACING THE MATURE LGBT COMMUNITY
Loneliness due to loss of life partner or long term relationship
 Lack of social settings or groups, (not into the bar scene or many venues suited for younger members of the community) 
No children for many members of the community and limited family to provide care and companionship
Unique financial and legal situations that members face (due to no protection through traditional marriage rights) 
Loss of interest in personal enrichment activities outside the home due to limited (or no) sense of community and/or companionship
Possible poor diet due to eating alone and loss of interest,
Travel (in an open-and-accepting environment)
No link between the young and the mature members of the community – a need for mentoring and relationship building 
Arts & Crafts
Culinary Skills (eating well as we age)
Understanding the stages of the aging process and how that may be unique [for LGBT people]
Limited or no LGBT welcoming transitional living facilities
Grief counseling oriented toward this population

13. WHAT THE COALITION FOR LGBT WILL DO
Serve as the central focal point of services, and cultivating a synergistic spirit of cooperation related to assisting LGBT aging in all of North Texas. 
Be a small organization that consist of social workers, public policy experts, financial development and an organization director or chief executive officer. 
Incorporate the appropriate disciplines, local and national organizations, and services to become an expert in the topic of LGBT aging for North Texas. 
Tap into the talents of existing services and research in North Texas; serve in a case management role and direct advocacy for members of the LGBT Community.

14. WHAT THE COALITION FOR LGBT WILL DO
Develop a public policy forum on the topic of LGBT aging and will work with academia and the political structures to improve municipal, state, and federal legislation for significant representation to the North Texas aging LGBT population. 
Work diligently to create synergy and maintain a genuine spirit of cooperation and involvement of area service providers. 
Will seek grants, government funding, and individual financial support to provide resources to complete its mission.

15. WHAT THE COALITION FOR LGBT WILL NOT DO
Re-create or re-invent existing direct services of any organizations in North Texas to the aging in North Texas. 
Own or attempt to procure any major assets that would provide direct service such a housing, medical services, etc.
Be in a “funding competition” with existing LGBT services in North Texas. Instead, we will be constantly focused on and sensitive to funding sources and types so as to limit any competition.
