An Assessment of Sustainable Forest Management of Community Forest (A Case Study of Parbati Mahila Community Forest, Makwanpur Nepal ) Sangharshasaksham Mishra

2 INTRODUCTION Community forest Part of government forest area
Handed over to close community user Well define operational plan and constitution. Resource mgmt. and utilization by community All benefit goes to community Sustainable forest management Socio economical sustainability Cultural sustainability Ecological sustainability

3 OBJECTIVES To assess the status of sustainable forest management.
To assess the socio-economical sustainability. To assess the ecological sustainability .

4 METHODOLOGY A) Sampling Design for Social Data: Total Enumeration
36 households were taken B) Sampling Design for Ecological Data: Stratified Systematic sampling with 0.5% sampling intensity. 22 plots 20m×25m for Trees, 10m×10m for Poles, 5m×5m for Sapling and 2m×5m for Regeneration C) 79 indicators under 5 criteria Design of Sample Plot 25m 20m 2m 10m 5m

5 METHODOLOGY Criteria for assessment Enabling conditions for SFM (C1)
Socio economic, cultural and Governance aspects (C2) Forest Condition and Ecosystem Health (C3) Forest Production (C4) Soil, Water and Biodiversity Protection (C5) Among which C1 and C2 represents the Socio- economical Sustainability Criteria and C3, C4 and C5 represents the Ecological Sustainability Criteria.

6 Primary Data Collection Secondary Data Collection
METHODOLOGY Data Collection Primary Data Collection Secondary Data Collection Socio-economical Data Collection Ecological Data Collection Analysis of qualitative and quantitative data: Sustainability Index (SI) for Individual Criteria: Sum of average score of all indicators within a criterion = Number of indicators in each criterion Overall Index: Sum of scores of all criteria = Number of criteria ( Singh, 2002)

7 Socio-economical Sustainability Index
FINDINGS Socio-economical Sustainability Index

8 Ecological Sustainability Index
FINDINGS (Cont…… Ecological Sustainability Index

9 Sustainability Indices in Criterion Level

10 Overall Sustainability Index

11 CONCLUSIONS Comparing to the criteria developed by DoF condition of forest is poor. Forest has only 71.7 % chance of sustainability. Status of SFM is Good Still room to improve ( 29.3%)
