2 Early Life Grew up in Chicago Illinois Raised in a poor family
Received lessons in a local synagogue Family He had 11 siblings His father was killed when he was 15 This caused him to become the main income for his family

3 Career Beginnings Benny moved to Los Angeles after his father died
He participated in the Ben Pollack band when he moved there He then moved to New York with the band a year later Benjamin left the band shortly after arriving in New York This allowed him to become a freelance musician

4 Historical Impact Benjamin Goodman is one of the most influential musicians in the swing era He was the one of the first band leaders to integrate his band in this era His skill enabled him to receive a Grammy

5 Nonbiased Band Leader Lionel Hampton Teddy Wilson
He played the vibraphone Teddy Wilson Teddy was a pianist Benny once said, "If a guy's got it, let him give it. I'm selling music, not prejudice." Both men were African Americans They were both given the opportunity to participate in the Benny Goodman Band

7 Carnegie Hall Benjamin Goodman was the leader of the first jazz band to perform in Carnegie Hall This is one of the most prestigious classical music halls in America He performed with other musicians such as Count Basie and Duke Ellington

8 Longevity Benny Played from the young age of 10, to the age of 77
His last performance was only days before his death in 1986
