Global Community – the way all the countries and people of the world interact with one another.
We will learn how America is connected to the global community through the 5 themes of geography.

4. Theme #1 - History

5. What is history? History is a record of the past.
We can use many different sources to study history.
Written records
Primary source – firsthand account (eyewitness)
Secondary source – secondhand account (hearsay)
Oral tradition (word of mouth)
Artifacts (items from the past)
Declaration of Independence and Constitution- documents
Lesson- How the US grows into 50 states

Geography – study of the places, features, and people on Earth and how they affect one another
2 main types
Physical Geography – focuses on the Earth’s natural features
Human Geography – focuses on people

Maps
Surveying Equipment
Tools to measure distance and elevation

Can take photos of the Earth from space

Government – systems for organizing people and making laws- Constitution- law of our land

The USA is a representative democracy (indirect democracy)
We vote for leaders who make decisions based on what we tell them
Government decides how we interact with governments from other countries around the world

Economics –how people distribute resources by exchanging money, goods, and services.

Goods – items you can buy
Services – helpful acts performed by people

Government controls the whole economy
