Within the past 30 years the United States has seen childhood obesity double and quadruple among adolescents
Childhood obesity immediate health effects include high cholesterol or blood pressure, with a 70% risk factor of cardiovascular disease among youth aged 5-17
Children have a great risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem (CDC, 2015).
“Developmentally, adolescence is when self image and self-esteem begin to and pressure toward social acceptance and perceived inability to meet those perceptions are leading to social difficulties and dissatisfaction among obese teens, including lower perceived competence in physical appearance and peer engagment (Schwimmer et al., 2003).”
