Matter
2
Warm up Complete the analogy…
“Biology is the study of life while chemistry is the study of ______________” Please try to complete the analogy on a post it then place it on the board. Most students will say chemicals … matter is the correct answer the branch of science that deals with the identification of the substances of which matter is composed; the investigation of their properties and the ways in which they interact, combine, and change; and the use of these processes to form new substances.
3
Today’s objective Classify matter in terms of atoms, elements, compounds and mixtures.

POGIL Process Oriented Guided Inquiry Learning! aka “Team Notes” Rules
All members involved in discussion All members write down same responses – in complete sentences (when appropriate) Only one team member may ask me questions Stop at “Stop” signs – I will only check one team member’s paper (see # 2)

Classification of Matter
Why? Model 1 - Atoms, Particles and Molecules Examine the shapes and the letters used to represent them. Why were R, T and Sq (and combinations thereof) used to represent these particular particles? Choose a student to read “why” out loud. R - round T- Triangle Sq - square

Classification of Matter
In Model 1 Every time you see it: Use one color to highlight the word “atom(s)” Use another color to highlight the word “molecule” Use another color to highlight the word “chemical bond”
7
Page 2 #1-6 Briefly read through each question
While doing so, highlight the words “atoms” and “molecules” with the colors you used on Model 1 Answer questions 1-6 with your group. Use complete sentences so your thoughts are complete! Remember: everyone writes down identical answers to each question. At the stop sign - get your work checked When students have answered the questions sufficiently - give them ONE fresh copy of page 1 and every student a copy of page 2.
8
Page 3 #7: I will provide a ziplock bag containing the 9 drawings already cut up - no need to cut up your own work! #8 and #11 have the correct number of lines! Students struggle with #8 and recognizing that pure substances can be a sample of the same molecules
9
Page 4 Remember to Use complete sentences
Check your work with your teacher at the STOP sign Complete the extension questions: due Tuesday
10
Place one on each table for the day.
