2 1872 Born January 20, in San Francisco
She had three brothers, one sister and grew up in Oakland, California First woman to graduate with civil engineering from the University of California at Berkeley Graduated from Ecole des Beaux-Arts, Paris for Architecture. 1904 First woman to be granted an architect’s license in California Opened her own office in San Francisco Had a prolific careers, designed nearly 800 projects in California and Hawaii many are now considered historical landmarks. 1957 Died on February 2, 1957 at age 85 in San Francisco. Received American Institute of Architects Gold Metal Award (There have only been seven California architects have been honored with the Gold Medal from the AIA since the award was established in 1907.)

3 1906 The Great San Francisco earthquake
Julia opened her business in San Francisco atelier style. Then the earthquake hit. The tragic event was a catalyst for her career. She was commissioned for many projects including houses, churches, clubs, banks, schools, hospitals, and stores as the city rebuilds. Biographer Sara Holmes Boutelle wrote: “Her generosity of spirit, as evidenced by the profit-sharing in the office and her support of her staff … make her come alive as a person dedicated to her associates and to the practice of architecture.”

7 Hearst Castle Julia met William Randolph Hearst in 1919.
Mr. Hearst said that he “wished for something a little different from what other people are doing in California,” Julia’s classical training at Beaux-Arts, along with her engineering degree and expertise with reinforced concrete, made her the ideal architect for this demanding commission. Hearst was 56 and Julia 47 when they began their lifelong collaboration of 27 years.

8 Julia Morgan spend the next 27 years designing and building the “Ranch” known today as Hearst Castle in San Simeon. Including: 115 room main house (La Casa Grande), the guesthouses (Casa del Mar, Casa del Monte, and Casa del Sol), the esplanade and garden terraces, the indoor and outdoor swimming pools, the movie theater, tennis courts, a billiard room, wine cellar, two libraries, a private zoo and aviary, dog kennels, landing strip and airplane hangar, Thoroughbred horse ranch and miles of bridle paths, and a five-mile pergola.
